As a parent, it’s only natural to be concerned about your child’s interactions with artificial intelligence (AI). With the rise of AI-powered technologies like chatbots, it’s becoming more common for children to interact with these systems. Recently, SnapChat introduced “My AI”, which allows users to have conversations with an AI assistant within the app. It’s similar to having a back and forth chat with Chat GPT, but built into the app.

I came across a full on discussion my 12 year old son was having with My AI. I really didn’t know what to feel about this. Should I be concerned? What if it gives my kid bad advice? What if he is only talking to an AI and not real people about things? There are so many questions I have about this. While it may seem crazy at first, like most things in life, there are actually some benefits, as well as things to be aware of to stay safe. In this blog post, we’ll explore the potential benefits and concerns of children using AI, as well as provide some advice for parents to ensure their child’s safety while using these technologies.

Benefits of Children Using AI

Personalized Learning

One of the benefits of AI is its ability to personalize learning. AI-powered educational tools can analyze a child’s learning style and adapt their lessons to suit their individual needs. This can help children to learn at their own pace and in a way that’s best for them. Guidance from actual educational professionals will never be replaced, but think of this as another piece for them to add to their toolset. AI will slowly work it’s way into educational software, like any other emerging technology has before it.

Improved Communication Skills

Children who interact with AI-powered chatbots can improve their communication skills. Chatbots can help children practice their conversational skills and build confidence in social situations. This can be especially beneficial for children who may be shy or struggle with social anxiety. Think of chat bots as providing a practice space for language if they are not yet comfortable doing it socially with their peers yet.

Entertainment and Fun

AI can be a great source of entertainment and fun for children. With AI-powered toys and games, children can engage in interactive and imaginative play. This can be a great way for children to learn and explore in a safe and controlled environment. There can be a lot of doom and gloom thoughts when we think about AI. A lot of people my age will bring out a joke about SkyNet, from the movie The Terminator, for example. The reality is that all advanced breakthroughs in technology eventually become so common that they’ll get worked into toys and entertainment in some way. Let’s embrace the fact that we’ll get some fun out of this (and not just killer robots taking over humanity).

Concerns of Children Using AI

Safety and Privacy

One of the biggest concerns of children using AI is their safety and privacy. It’s important for parents to be aware of the types of information their child may be sharing with AI-powered systems. This includes personal information like their name, age, and location. This can not be stated enough. You have to be aware that anything shared with a bot may be winding up stored in a database. What will be done with that information? Maybe nothing at all, other than being saved to help the AI tool. However, maybe it will be used to target an individual for advertising. My point is, do some research so you know! More importantly, educate your children about the potential for anything they share to be saved and used elsewhere.

Dependence on AI

Another concern is the potential for children to become too reliant on AI. While AI can be a great tool for learning and entertainment, it’s important for children to also engage in real-world experiences and interactions with others. We thrive to interact socially. ChatBots will never replace talking with an actual person. Doing so would lead to an unhealthy lifestyle, as any solitary existence would be bound to do. Use these tools, but don’t forget to encourage real life interactions.

Bad Advice

There is also the concern that AI-powered chatbots may give children bad advice. While these systems are designed to be helpful and informative, they may not always provide the best advice for a child’s specific situation. They can also just be wrong, but present the data as fact. The only way to deal with this is by using good judgment, and assuming there is always room for error. This starts with how we educate our children to be inquisitive, and be safe with computers, data, and AI. We can’t allow them to blindly listen to Chat GPT or My AI. Teach them they are just tools, for good and bad, and not some all knowing tech source of truth.

Advice for Parents

Monitor your child’s interactions with AI

It’s important for parents to monitor their child’s interactions with AI-powered systems. This includes checking in on the types of conversations they’re having and the information they’re sharing. It’s also important to ensure that the AI-powered system is age-appropriate and safe for your child to use.

Educate your child about AI

It’s important for children to understand what AI is and how it works. This can help them to better understand their interactions with AI-powered systems and make informed decisions about what information to share.

Encourage real-world interactions

While AI can be a great tool for learning and entertainment, it’s important for children to also engage in real-world experiences and interactions with others. Encourage your child to spend time playing outside, reading books, and engaging in other activities that promote social interaction and learning.

In conclusion, AI can be a beneficial tool for children, but it’s important for parents to be aware of the potential risks and concerns. By monitoring your child’s interactions with AI, educating them about the technology, and encouraging real-world interactions, you can help ensure their safety and well-being while using these systems. Ultimately, it’s up to parents to make informed decisions about their child’s use of AI-powered technologies. It’s here to stay, so we might as well accept that, and just continue to educate our families how to use it safely.
